For the next San Diego

EARTH: The Operators' Manual

The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center is proud to bring environment-themed events to the citizens of San Diego. The goal of this programming is to highlight the science center’s role in educating the general public about global climate change, educate citizens about environmental issues, and offer action steps that the average person can take. The Fleet is a non-profit organization and, as its mission statement reads, “The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center seeks to inspire lifelong learning by furthering the public understanding and enjoyment of science and technology.”

San Diego Science Festival, Day 1

Friday, March 25, 2011,
5-7PM
The Fleet kicked off their ETOM event series during the San Diego Science Festival, which ran from March 19-26. On Friday, March 25, host Richard Alley shared his experiences in making the PBS documentary, offered a “sneak peek” at the upcoming program, and provided guests with a kind of “Everyman’s Guide” to what’s happening with Earth’s climate and sustainable energy resources and opportunities. Audience members also had a chance to chat with Richard, face to face, while he was signing early release copies of the ETOM book.

San Diego Science Festival, Day 2

Saturday, March 26, 2011, 11:15AM
The following day, March 26, at 11:15am, Richard hit it out of the ballpark (sic) with an entertaining and informative presentation to Science Festival attendees in Petco Park, the downtown baseball stadium. In this unusual venue (for science outreach) he brought kids on stage to simulate Earth’s orbit around the Sun (one driver of the Ice Ages), sang a song about plate tectonics (“Ring of Fire”—thanks to Johnny Cash) and more. Thanks also to the National Ice Core Lab (USGS & NSF) Richard had with him a 3,000-year-old piece of glacial ice from Antarctica, stored carefully in an insulated freezer, to help engage festival-goers with the latest information about climate changes throughout Earth’s history. Later that afternoon, he was part of “Ask A Scientist” during which youngsters had a chance to find out more about what careers in research are actually like. He made some very interested new friends!

Science Cafe

June 2011
Fleet will host a Science Café, during which a local scientist will give a 15-20 minute lecture on an environmental topic. Depending on the chosen speaker, related clips from ETOM programs or out-takes may also be shown. The evening will end with an open-ended Q&A. Potential events in 2012 include an Energy “contest” with local schools or colleges to increase green practices, and a Green Day family event in May or June 2012.
